A Jesuit who devoted himself to the evangelization of the indigenous people in Brazil and was called the "Apostle of the New World." He was born in Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands, studied at the University of Coimbra, and arrived in Brazil in 1553. He opened the third seminary in Brazil in Piratininga, a settlement that is the predecessor of today's São Paulo. He studied the Tupi language and worked to pacify and evangelize the hostile Tamaio people. In 1578, he was appointed Superior General of the Brazilian Province of the Society of Jesus. ブラジルで原住民教化に尽くし，〈新世界の使徒〉と呼ばれたイエズス会士。スペイン領カナリア諸島のテネリーフェで生まれ，コインブラ大学で学び，1553年ブラジルに到着した。今日のサン･パウロ市の前身集落ピラティニンガにブラジルで3番目の神学校を開校。トゥピ語を研究し，敵対的なタマイオ族の平定教化にあたった。78年イエズス会ブラジル管区長に任じられた。【山田睦男】
