A city in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the lowlands downstream of the Onga River and developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period. All coal mines are now closed. An industrial complex was created to promote the coal-producing region, and electrical equipment, metals, machinery and other companies have moved in. The Chikuho Main Line and Chikuho Electric Railway pass through the town, and many people commute to Kitakyushu City, accounting for about half of the employed population. Habu Park is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. 15.96 ^km2 . Population: 44,210 (2010).

福岡県北部の市。1958年市制。遠賀(おんが)川下流低地を占め，明治中期以降炭鉱町として発展。現在は全炭鉱が閉山。産炭地域振興のため工業団地が造成され，電機，金属，機械などの企業が進出。筑豊本線，筑豊電鉄が通じ，北九州市への通勤者が多く，就業者の約半数を占める。垣生(はぶ)公園は桜の名所。15.96km²。４万4210人（2010）。
