A general term for amphibians belonging to the Bufonidae family of the order Frogs, or another name for the Japanese common toad (illustration). There are about 366 species in 31 genera, distributed widely around the world, except for some areas such as Australia. Most species are large, with a body length of 10 to 15 cm, and the largest are the cane toad B. marinus (illustration) and the Colombian common toad B. blombergi , both of the Bufo genus, found in tropical America, which reach a maximum body length of just over 20 cm. However, the Rose's toad B. rosei of South Africa is only about 3 cm long, and the forest toads of the Pelophryne genus of Southeast Asia are only 2 to 3 cm long.
