The capital of the North-West Frontier Province in northern Pakistan. Located about 15km east of the Khyber Pass on the Afghanistan border, it has been a key transportation and commercial center connecting Central Asia and the Indian world since ancient times. It is famous for its handicrafts such as firearms, cigarettes, furniture, silk, cotton, and woolen fabrics. It became the capital of the Kushan dynasty in the 2nd century, and Gandhara art flourished.
