1930‐90 French actor and director. Professor at the Conservatoire. He first studied Russian at the École des Lingues Orientales in Paris, and then translated Russian, German, and Greek plays. He studied acting under the tutelage of the famous Russian-born actress Tania Barachova, and participated as an actor in the Théâtre des Jours in Marseilles (1962-63) and the theatre company of the Maison de la Culture in Caen (1964-67). He also served as secretary to the novelist and poet L. Aragon (1960-62). Since 1972, he has been the manager of the Théâtre Cartier in Ivry, a suburb of Paris, and since 1981, the Théâtre National de Chaillot, where he stages a wide repertoire of classical plays (Racine, Molière), modern classics (B.
