It is one of the Apocrypha of the Old Testament. Along with Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, it forms the so-called "wisdom literature." It consists of 19 chapters, divided into two or three parts based on its content. Generally, chapters 1 to 5 are end times books that deal with the fates of the righteous and the wicked. Chapters 6 to 9 are about God's wisdom and hymns to it. Chapters 10 to 19 are about God's wisdom in the history of Israel and prohibition of idolatry. Overall, it has a strong apocalyptic literary element. Traditionally, it is said to have been written by Solomon, but it is believed to have actually been written by a Jew in the Diaspora who was influenced by Greek philosophy around the 1st century BC. Judaism and Protestantism do not recognize it as canonical and count it as one of the Apocrypha, but Catholicism declared the Vulgate canonical under the name of the Book of Wisdom at the Council of Trent (1545-63).
