A perennial legume used as pasture grass, also known as red clover or purple clover. Native to western Asia and the Middle East, it was introduced to southern Europe in the 13th century, but it did not become widespread throughout Europe until the 18th century. It was introduced to Japan from the Netherlands in the 18th century, but it was not cultivated as pasture grass until the early Meiji period when it was introduced from America. Today, some of it has grown wild in fields and roadsides all over the country. The leaves are compound, consisting of three leaflets, and grow alternately on the clumpy stems, with long stalks.
