A city in south-central Chile. It is located about 20 km inland from the Pacific coast, where the Cayecaye and Cruces rivers join to form the Valdivia River. Founded by the Spanish in 1552, it was a strategically important base during the colonial period, but it developed only after a large number of German immigrants settled there from the mid-19th century, and even today the town has a strong German influence. As the center of a rich agricultural and forestry region, it distributes grain, potatoes, apples, livestock, dairy products, and timber, and is also a thriving industrial city with factories for food, woodworking, metal processing, leather products, textiles, lumber, and shipbuilding. At the mouth of the Valdivia River is the outer port of Corral, where products from the region are transported by barge from the city to the port for shipment. The city is home to the Austral University (1954), and is the cultural center of the southern part of the country. The city was severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 1960. The city is served by the Pan-American Highway and a branch line of the Trans-Chilean Railway. Population: 113,512 (1992 estimate). Valdivia |
