The most important mineral source of lead is galena PbS (86.6% lead), which occurs in various deposits, but is often associated with sphalerite and is often grouped together as lead-zinc deposits. Lead is found in small quantities on Earth, but it has a strong tendency to combine with sulfur, forming galena as an independent mineral. Sulfosalt minerals containing lead are also known, but in small quantities. In the oxidation zone of the deposit, galena reacts with oxygen and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to form cerussite PbCO 3 (orthorhombic system, specific gravity 6.6, colorless to white to gray, diamond luster) and anglesite PbSO 4 (orthorhombic system, specific gravity 6.3, lead 68.3%, colorless to white to gray, diamond luster, earthy if fine). 方鉛鉱は鉱床の酸化帯では大気中の酸素や二酸化炭素と反応して白鉛鉱cerussite PbCO3(斜方晶系,比重6.6,無色~白~灰,ダイヤモンド光沢),硫酸鉛鉱anglesite PbSO4(斜方晶系,比重6.3,鉛68.3%,無色~白~灰,ダイヤモンド光沢,微粒の場合は土状)に変わる。
