A typical tunic-style outer garment from the Romanesque period (11th to 12th centuries) in Europe. It was worn by both men and women. It was a loose garment made of wool or silk, and generally had sleeves, but some were sleeveless and overcoat-like. Influenced by the Crusades, the briaut gradually gained an oriental flamboyance, with embroidery and decoration on the cuffs and hems, and some had trumpet- or funnel-shaped sleeves that opened at the cuffs. Undergarments were loose linen garments called chains, which are equivalent to today's chemise.
