King of England of the Stuart dynasty (reigned 1625-1649). Second son of James I. Married a French princess in 1625. In order to save the national treasury, which was in dire straits due to the mismanagement of his favorite, the Duke of Buckingham, and the increasing cost of war, he implemented a tax increase policy, but was met with fierce opposition from Parliament, which presented him with a petition for rights and he dissolved Parliament in 1629. For the next 11 years he did not convene Parliament, and with Lord and Strafford as his close aides, he ruled tyrannically in a style known as the "policy of thoroughness." He attempted to force the state religion on Scotland, which was resisted, and he convened the Shorter and Longer Parliaments in 1640. This was the catalyst for the Puritan Revolution, and he was executed in 1649.

スチュアート朝イングランドの国王（在位1625年―1649年）。ジェームズ１世の次男。1625年フランス王女と結婚。寵臣(ちょうしん)バッキンガム公の失政と戦費増大で窮乏した国庫財政救済のため増税政策をとり，議会の激しい反対を受けて権利請願を突き付けられ，1629年議会を解散。以後11年間議会を召集せずロードとストラフォードの２人を側近として〈徹底政策〉とよばれる専制政治を行った。スコットランドに国教を強制しようとして反抗を受け，1640年短期・長期両議会を召集。これがピューリタン革命の契機となり，1649年処刑された。
