…The Realist school was pioneered by al-Sharqāwī (1920-87) with the publication of The Great Earth, followed by Naguib Mahfouz and Tayyib Sāliḥ (1928- ). In the short story genre, after the Romantic school of Mahmūd Taymūr (1894-1973) and Yahya Ḥaqqī (1905-92), the Realist school was completed by Yusuf Idrīs (1927-91). The Romantic poets, pioneered by Ḥalīl Muṭran (d. 1945), were followed by such masters as Majnī al-Mājinī (1889-1949), Shukrī (d. 1958), 'Abbās Maḥmūd al-'Aqqād (1889-1964), and Jubrān (d. 1931), all of whom sought personal liberation from the shackles of tradition.
