One of the successors of IG Farben, a world-class chemical company in Germany before World War II. Founded in 1863, it manufactured aniline dyes and other products. In 1925, it merged with five other companies to become IG Farben. In 1952, IG Farben was divided and the company was re-established as Hoechst Dyestfertigungsgemeinschaft. In 1974, the company adopted its current name. It has aggressively expanded its business, producing pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibers, dyes, plastics, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, paints, and more. It is one of the largest companies in the German chemical industry. Its subsidiaries include Hoechst Marion Roussel, a major new drug manufacturer established in 1995 by merging the pharmaceutical division of Dow Chemical with the French company Roussel. In December 1999, it merged its biotechnology and pharmaceutical divisions with Rhône-Poulenc, France's largest pharmaceutical company, and established the new company Aventis in Strasbourg, France. It has become one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies.

第２次大戦前のドイツにおける世界的規模の化学工業会社イーゲー・ファルベンの後継会社の一つ。1863年設立，アニリン染料などを製造。1925年他の会社５社と合同してイーゲー・ファルベン社となる。1952年イーゲー・ファルベンの分割でヘキスト染料会社として再発足。1974年現社名に。積極的に事業を拡大し，医薬品，合成繊維，染料，プラスチック，化学肥料，農薬，塗料などを生産。ドイツ化学工業の最大手の一つ。傘下にはダウ・ケミカルの医薬品部門とフランスのルーセル社との合併で1995年に設立された新薬大手のヘキスト・マリオン・ルーセル社などがある。1999年12月フランス最大の医薬企業ローヌ・プーランと，バイオテクノロジー，医薬品部門を統合し，新会社アベンティスAventisをフランスのストラスブールに設立。医薬品分野で世界最大級の企業となった。
