Toragoro Tanahashi

Chemical engineer. Born in Niigata Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry at the College of Engineering of the Imperial University in 1893 (Meiji 26). He founded companies such as Nippon Chemical Industry, Tetsukosha, Hokkai Electric Industry, Showa Special Steel, Nippon Smelting and Mining, as well as the Chemical Industry Times, and contributed to the development of domestic resources and the growth of the chemical industry. While at university, he researched a method for manufacturing potassium iodide from seaweed, and was highly praised for his research and development of unique technologies using domestic resources, such as methods for manufacturing potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate fertilizer, potassium chlorate, and chromates. In 1939 (Showa 14), he was honored with a banquet at the Imperial Court as one of Japan's top ten inventors.

化学技術者。新潟県の生まれ。1893年（明治26）帝国大学工科大学応用化学科を卒業。日本化学工業、鉄興社、北海電気興業、昭和特殊製鋼、日本製錬鉱業などの各会社および化学工業時報社を創立して、国内資源の開発、化学工業の発展に寄与した。在学中に海藻からヨードカリ（ヨウ化カリウム）を製造する方法を研究したほか、硝酸カリ、硫酸カリ肥料、塩素酸カリ、クロム酸塩の製法など、国内資源による独自の技術を研究開発した点が高く評価される。1939年（昭和14）十大発明家として宮中賜餐(しさん)の栄に浴した。
