Kändler - Johann Joachim Kändler

Kändler - Johann Joachim Kändler

German potter. Born in Fischbach, Saxony. Invited to the Meissen Manufactory in 1733, he worked as a model maker (modelmeister) for the manufactory until his death, making a great contribution to the fame of Meissen. In particular, his lavish dinner set with colorful decorations on a white background, known as the Swan Service, and his small porcelain statuettes with motifs of characters from Italian comedies are masterpieces that reflect the Rococo taste of the time and had a great influence on the history of ceramics in the early modern period. He also created many life-size animal statues for the "Japanese Palace" planned by Augustus III, Duke of Saxony, but none of these remain in their original state. He also spent many years working on a huge porcelain equestrian statue for the king, which was left unfinished.
