Born: March 26, 1905, Vienna Died: September 2, 1997. Vienna Austrian psychoanalyst. Professor of Neurology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and Chief of the Neurology Department at Vienna City Hospital. As a theorist of the "Third Viennese School," he advocated his own unique existential analysis. He studied under S. Freud and A. Adler. During World War II, he was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Nazis because he was Jewish, and lost both his parents, wife, and child. His experience of surviving for one year became the basis for his existential analysis, which surpasses Freud's theories. His main works are Nacht und Nebel (1947), Psychotherapy and Existentialism (67), and The Illnesses of Modern Man. His other collected works are 7 volumes, 61-62.
