...Miyakoji Sonohachi, a disciple of Bungonojo, popularized Sonohachibushi (Miyazonobushi) in Kyoto, and its offshoot, Shungifuji Shoden, performed Shodenbushi in Kabuki in the Kamigata region, while Miyakoji Shigetayu, a disciple of Bungonojo, performed Shigetayubushi in theaters and tatami rooms in Osaka from around the Genbun era (1736-41). Kawatobushi, Shinnaibushi, Sonohachibushi, and other plays were often sung at drinking parties, so they were called Sakana Joruri or Uta Joruri. Kyoto was the first place to see the birth of Joruri....
