Japanese: ヨハネ（英語表記）Iōannēs; John

Saint. Also called John the Apostle. One of the twelve apostles. Son of Zebedee and Salome, a Galilean fisherman. At Jesus' invitation, he and his brother James immediately became his disciples and followed him. He was called "the son of thunder" along with James because of his zealous and impulsive nature, and played an important role as a capable preacher. He is considered one of the most representative apostles along with Peter and James (Matthew 17:1, Galatians 2:9). Tradition attributes the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation to John, but none of this is certain.

聖人。使徒ヨハネともいう。十二使徒の一人。ガリラヤの漁師ゼベダイとサロメの子。兄弟ヤコブと一緒にイエスの招きによってただちにその弟子となりイエスに従った。熱心で激しやすい性格のゆえにヤコブとともに「雷の子」と呼ばれ，有能な説教者として重要な役割を果し，ペテロやヤコブとともに使徒中代表的存在とされている (マタイ福音書 17・1，ガラテア書2・9) 。伝承は『ヨハネによる福音書』，3つの『ヨハネの手紙』と『ヨハネの黙示録』を使徒ヨハネに帰しているが，いずれも確かでない。
