Born: 1780. Wallachia, Gorge
Died June 7, 1821. Leader of the Targovišter Romanian national uprising. Born to a free peasant family in Wallachia. Fought on the Russian side in the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-1812, he was the commander of the peasant army. Seeing the Heterian uprising as an opportunity, he raised an army and aimed to expand the rights of Romanians. He was betrayed and murdered as a result of the defection of the peasant soldiers and conflict with the aristocracy.
