Carabiner

Japanese: カラビナ - carabiner

A metal fitting for connecting the aircraft to the harness. In the early days, those used for mountaineering were used, but recently most are used exclusively for paragliding. Carabiners also have a lifespan and should be replaced every two years. Carabiners used for paragliding are divided into aluminum carabiners (duralumin), steel carabiners, and stainless steel carabiners by material. In addition, there are trapezoidal carabiners, mini carabiners, D-shaped carabiners, and oval carabiners by shape. All carabiners have a safety ring or an equivalent mechanism, and are designed so that the gate does not open easily due to external pressure. What is noteworthy is the presence of a gate lock as shown in the photo. When a load is applied to the carabiner, the body stretches slightly and the hooks lock together to ensure strength. (Even screw-in types ensure strength by being connected.) Please note that if the installation is incomplete and the gate is open, the strength will be significantly reduced.

機体とハーネスをつなぐ為の金具。初期の頃は登山用のものが使われていたが、最近はパラグライダー専用のものが殆どである。カラビナにも寿命が有り、２年に一度は交換したい。パラグライダーに使われるカラビナは、まず、材質別でアルミカラビナ（ジュラルミン）・スチールカラビナ・ステンレスカラビナと分けられる。また、形状別では、台形カラビナ・ミニカラビナ・Ｄ形カラビナ・楕円形カラビナなどがある。全てのカラビナが安全環またはそれに相当する機構をもち、外部からの圧力でゲートが簡単に開かない構造となっている。注目するのは写真の様なゲートロックの存在である。カラビナに負荷がかかると僅かに本体が伸びフックどうしがロックして強度を確保している。（ねじ込みタイプでも結合により強度を確保している。）取付けが不完全でゲートが開いた状態では強度が著しく低下してしまう事に注意したい。
