It conducts a wide range of research activities, from basic research on nuclear physics, reactor chemistry, fuel and materials, safety research on light water reactors, high temperature gas reactors (the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) is scheduled to reach criticality in September 1998), research and development on nuclear fusion (the critical plasma test facility (JT-60) began operation in April 1985), and research on radiation applications (the large-scale synchrotron radiation facility (SPring-8) began operation in October 1997).
