The central city of East Bohemia in central Czech Republic. Its German name is Königgrätz. It has a population of 101,000 (1996). It is located at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. Together with Pardubice, it forms the industrial district of eastern Bohemia, with thriving industries including chemicals (including photographic materials), machinery, musical instruments, furniture, beer, lumber, and glass. It is one of the oldest towns in Bohemia, and developed in the 10th century as a Slavic fortress city connecting the Danube with the eastern sea. チェコ中部,東ボヘミア地方の中心都市。ドイツ名はケーニヒグレーツKöniggrätz。人口10万1000(1996)。ラベ(エルベ)川とオルリツェOrlice川の合流点に位置する。パルドビツェとともにボヘミア東部工業地区を形成し,写真材料などの化学・機械・楽器・家具・ビール・製材・ガラス工業などが盛ん。ボヘミアで最も古い町の一つで,10世紀にドナウ川と東方の海を結ぶスラブ人の城砦都市として発達。1225年には国王都市となり,1653年には司教座がおかれた。
