The central city of East Bohemia in central Czech Republic. Its German name is Königgrätz. It has a population of 101,000 (1996). It is located at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. Together with Pardubice, it forms the industrial district of eastern Bohemia, with thriving industries including chemicals (including photographic materials), machinery, musical instruments, furniture, beer, lumber, and glass. It is one of the oldest towns in Bohemia, and developed in the 10th century as a Slavic fortress city connecting the Danube with the eastern sea.
