Shigeru Nanbara

Japanese: 南原繁 - なんばらしげる
Shigeru Nanbara

Political philosopher. Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in 1914 (Taisho 3). Joined the Ministry of Home Affairs but returned to the University of Tokyo, where he became an associate professor in the Faculty of Law in 1921 and a professor in 1925. He sought his own political philosophy based on the study of non-church Christian faith, Plato, Kant, Fichte, and others, and made a sharp criticism of Nazism in "State and Religion" (1942). After World War II, he served as the president of the University of Tokyo from 1945 (Showa 20) to 1951. During that time, he was appointed to the House of Peers by Imperial Rule in 1946, and worked on reforming the education system. During the Cold War, he advocated a total peace, and in 1950 he debated Prime Minister Yoshida Shigeru, who criticized him as a "man of learning to please the world." From the mid-1950s onwards, he devoted himself to writing, and wrote such works as "Fichte's Political Philosophy" (1959), "A History of Political Theory" (1962), and "Introduction to Political Philosophy" (1971). He also published a collection of tanka poems titled Keisou (1948). He became a member of the Japan Academy in 1946 and its president in 1970. He served as the first president of the Japanese Political Science Association from 1948 to 1960.
