A city in northwestern Cuba. It is a port city located about 90 km east of the capital Havana, at the head of Matanzas Bay, which opens into the Straits of Florida. Founded by the Spaniards in 1693, it grew to be Cuba's second largest city by 1860, but its growth slowed down due to the development of the sugar industry in the east. It was a center of literary activity known as the "Athens of Cuba," with various literary facilities and many scholars and artists active in the city. It is currently one of Cuba's main ports, mainly shipping sugar and henequen (a textile raw material). It also has industries such as rayon, rope, shoemaking, fertilizer, and matches. Old buildings remain in the city, including the 17th-century San Severino Fort and the 18th-century Cathedral of St. Carlos. It is connected to Havana by rail and road. Population: 116,037 (1989 estimate).

キューバ北西部の都市。首都ハバナの東約 90km，フロリダ海峡に開口するマタンサス湾の湾奥に位置する港湾都市。 1693年スペイン人によって建設され，1860年までにはキューバ第2の都市に成長したが，その後東部での砂糖産業の発展に押され，成長の勢いが弱まった。「キューバのアテネ」として知られる文芸活動の中心地で，各種の文芸施設があり，多くの学者や芸術家が市で活動した。現在キューバの主要港の一つで，おもに砂糖，ヘネケン (繊維原料) を積出す。またレーヨン，ロープ，製靴，肥料，マッチなどの工業がある。市内には 17世紀のサンセベリノ要塞，18世紀の聖カルロス大聖堂など古い建築物が残っている。ハバナと鉄道，道路で連絡。人口 11万 6037 (1989推計) 。
