Bottle brush

Bottle brush

An evergreen shrub or small tree of the Myrtaceae family (APG classification: Myrtaceae). It grows to a height of 3-6 meters. The branches are rather thin and easily bent. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, pointed at the tip, entire and leathery. New leaves are silky hairy. In May and June, the lower part of the new branches bears spikes 10-15 cm long. There are five small sepals and petals. There are about 50 beautiful deep red stamens, and the long filaments about 3 cm long stand out. The fruits are borne in large numbers around the branches like insect eggs, flattened and spherical, about 6 mm in diameter, concave at the top, brown and woody, and never fall off. Native to Australia. The name has the same meaning as the English name Bottle Brush, as the inflorescence resembles a brush used to wash bottles.

Plants in this genus are also known collectively as Callistemon or Brassica napus, and there are about 40 species distributed in Australia. Several species were imported to Japan in the mid-Meiji period. Other species cultivated as ornamental trees include Callistemon japonica and Callistemon arbutifolia, which have thin, linear or narrow lanceolate leaves and deep red flowers. They are propagated by seed, cuttings, and layering, and in the case of seedlings, the fruits on branches in the second or third year are best. They are cultivated in warm areas west of the southern Kanto region, and are best in sunny, slightly dry places.
