A clan whose family name is Unno-sho in Shinano Province (present-day Higashi-machi, Ogata-gun, Nagano Prefecture). It is also written as Uno-shi. Origin unknown. According to the "Shinshu Shigeno Family Genealogy," they are said to be descendants of a person named Shigeno Ason Zenbuchi, the great-grandson of Emperor Seiwa, but there are other theories and this is doubtful. The family name Unno is recorded in the same genealogy from Hiromichi's generation, and it is said that it was known on par with the neighboring Mochizuki and Nezu from the late Heian period. It is appropriate to see it as a lineage of local lords based in Unno-sho, which was the territory of the regent family at the time. Hiromichi's grandson Yukihiro appears to have served as a samurai commander for Kiso Yoshinaka during the Battle of Mizushima in the "Tale of the Heike" and was killed in battle. His son Yuki followed Yoshinaka's son Shimizukanja Yoshitaka in Kamakura, but later became a Kamakura vassal and was highly valued as a skilled archer and horseman.
