Located in the Kuznetsk Basin in central Russia, this is one of Russia's largest coalfields. It is also called Kuzbass. It spans the Kemerovo and Novosibirsk oblasts in Western Siberia and the Altai region. The reserves are approximately 800 billion tons. The coal is bituminous and subbituminous, with an ash content of approximately 10% and a sulfur content of less than 1%. Mining began in 1851, and after the formation of the Ural-Kuznetsk Industrial Complex under the Soviet government, it developed rapidly, with cities such as Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk, and it is also one of Russia's leading metallurgical and heavy industrial regions. → Related articles Siberia | Coalfields | Prokopyevsk | Russia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
