The first book on Japan written by an American was probably Japan, Past and Present (1855) by historian Richard Hildreth (1807-65). Known as the author of the six-volume History of the United States (1845-52), Hildreth became interested in the European discovery of Japan, which took place around the same time, while researching the European "discovery" and development of America. He then read through all the literature on Japan and compiled it into a book.
