Muong

Japanese: Muong
Muong

...The theory that Vietnamese is a descendant of Thai is supported by its structural characteristics, but has weaknesses in terms of commonality of lexical elements. On the other hand, similarities with Mon-Khmer (Austroasiatic languages) have been recognized, especially in basic vocabulary such as names of bodies and numerals, so the theory that it belongs to that family has been strongly supported, but its relationship with the non-tonal languages of that family has not yet been proven. At present, the only language that is known to be a descendant of Vietnamese is Muong, the language of the Muong people scattered in the mountainous areas from the north to the center. Muong is of great value in the study of the history of the Vietnamese language, as it retains initial consonants that have been lost in present-day Vietnamese, and the two are sometimes called Vietnamoong or Viet-Muong.
