Large room - Obeya

Japanese:
Large room - Obeya

A kabuki term. Dressing rooms were allocated according to the rank and role of the actor. Actors below the rank of Nadai were not assigned individual rooms, but shared a large wooden-floored room on the third floor. The lower-ranking actors, called "aichu" and "chudori," would dress up in this large room. This led to the custom of calling these actors "Obeya." Also, from its location, the room was given the names "Sankai" and "Sankai-san." Because it was so spacious, the room was also used for various events, ceremonies, and rehearsals. In the past, the structure and style of the Obeya had a set pattern that was common to all theaters, but today there is no particular set pattern. However, the names "Obeya" and "Sankai-san," which refer to lower-ranking actors, are used not only in kabuki but also in the field of film.
