A Buddhist book from the Kamakura period. Six volumes. It was compiled based on the notes written by his disciple Koun Kaiso of the daily lectures given by Dogen, the founder of the Japanese Soto sect, to his disciples, monks and laypeople, at the Kannon Dori Kosho Horin-ji Temple in Fukakusa, Yamashiro (Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City), during the Katei era (1235-38). Although it is not a systematic book, it explains in detail the knowledge required for students of Buddhism in a simple style. There are three versions of this work: the Keian edition, the Meiwa edition (popular edition) edited by Menzan Zuiho, and the Choenji edition. There are differences in the arrangement of the volumes and the presence or absence of chapters in the main text, but in recent times it has been said that the Choenji edition conveys the ancient form.
