A general term for the genus Charophyte, a group of green plants called Charophytes. It can be distinguished from the other Charophytes in that the internode cells have no cortex, the antheridium is located at the top of the branchlets, and the crown cells of the egg-laying organs are in two rows. There are about 50 species of Charophyte in Japan, but most of them are shade plants that prefer low light. N. flexilis Ag. var. longifolia and N. flexilis Ag. var. flexilis grow in pure colonies at depths of 6 to 10 meters mainly in lakes and marshes from central Honshu to Hokkaido. It is these species of Charophyte that form the vertical distribution of the lakes and marshes. N. megacarpa All. var. japonica Imah. is a species endemic to Japan, growing in warm regions.
