Dandong

A prefecture-level city in the southeastern Liaoning Province, China. It is located near the mouth of the Yalu River, on the border with North Korea. It has jurisdiction over three city districts and one autonomous county, and acts as the deputy governor of two county-level cities, including Fengcheng (as of 2016). The permanent population is 2,444,697 (2010). Han Chinese began settling here in the mid-19th century, and Andong County was established in 1876. In 1946, part of Andong County became Andong City, and in 1965, it was renamed Dandong City. It is the terminus of the Shenyang Line (Shenyang-Dandong), but the railway also crosses the Yalu River Bridge to Sinuiju on the opposite bank. In 2015, the Dandong-Dalian High-Speed Railway (Dandong-Dalian) opened. Dandong Langtou Airport is located near the city.

Its industries are characterized by lumber, paper, and chemical fiber industries using coniferous wood transported from the upper reaches of the Yalu River, as well as silk-reeling and weaving using tussah silkworms collected from the surrounding areas. Industries of machinery, electronics, automobile parts, and pharmaceuticals have also developed, making it one of the industrial bases of the northeastern region. The surrounding areas produce rice, sorghum, corn, and soybeans, and fishing and salt production are also carried out. Due to its geographical location, it served as a base for the Japanese military during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars.
