The four basic elements of a sacrificial ritual are a consecrated holy place (the ritual site), a sacrificial animal to be killed, a ritual performer (priestly person) who performs the ritual, including the ritual killing, and a sacrificer (usually a participant) who brings the sacrificial animal and seeks the ritual effect. These latter three interact in a specific procedure in the sacred site, which includes (1) consecration of the sacrificer, the sacrificer, and the sacrificial animal, (2) the entrance of the three into the sacred site, (3) the sacrificer's contact with the sacrificial animal, (4) the sacrificer's killing of the sacrificial animal and the application of its blood to the altar, (5) the participants' consumption of the meat, although not always, and (6) the exit. …
