Braganza Dynasty

Japanese:
Braganza Dynasty

The fourth dynasty of Portugal (1640-1910) and the Imperial House of Brazil (1822-89). The House of Bragança was born in 1401 from the marriage of Dom Afonso, the illegitimate son of King João I (reigned 1385-1433), and the daughter of Nuno Pereira, the commander-in-chief of the royal army, and was one of the most powerful noble families in Portugal from the beginning. Although it was temporarily suppressed by João II (reigned 1481-95), under the rule of the Spanish dynasty of Philip, it boasted the greatest power in Portugal, based in Vila Viçosa in the south. When Portugal regained its independence from Spain in 1640, Dom João, Duke of Bragança, was proclaimed king and founded the Bragança dynasty as João IV (reigned 1640-56). It continued for 270 years until the establishment of a republic in 1910 and the dethronement of King Manuel II (reigned 1908-10). During that time, the royal family fled into exile in Brazil in 1807 due to the invasion of Napoleon's army. In the revolution of 1820, King João VI (reigned 1816-26) returned to Brazil, but his son Dom Pedro, who remained behind, declared Brazilian independence and ascended to the throne as Emperor Pedro I (reigned 1822-31). The House of Braganza in Brazil continued for 67 years, until Pedro II (reigned 1831-89) was dethroned in the Republican Revolution of 1889.
