He Zhi-zhang (English name)
[Birth] Akiyoshi 4 (659)
[Died] Tenpo 3 (744)
A Chinese poet and calligrapher from the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Born in Yongxing, Kuaiji (Zhejiang Province). Style name: Ji Zhen. In the 1st year of the Zhengsheng era (695), he passed the Jinshi examination and became a doctor of the Four Schools. He then served in various official positions, and in the 13th year of the Kaiyuan era (725), he became an assistant minister in the Ministry of Rites, and finally became a secretary. However, in his later years he lived a dissolute life, wandering around town under the pseudonyms of Siming Kyoke and Secretary Waikan, and when drunk he would write calligraphy for people. He abandoned his official position and returned to his hometown, where he became a Taoist priest, but died soon after. He excelled in cursive and formal calligraphy. Although only 19 of his poems remain, his straightforward personality made him an important figure among the refined people of the time, and he is also known for discovering Li Bai's talent and calling him the "immortal sage."
