A state in northeastern Brazil. Its area is 559,921 km2 (6.62% of the country's land area). Its population is 1.26 million (1995). Its capital is Salvador. It is the fourth largest state in Brazil, accounting for 8% of the national population. The Portuguese arrived in the bay on All Saints' Day, November 1, 1501, and named it Bahia Todos os Santos. It has a subtropical climate, with an average high temperature of 32.4°C and a low temperature of 17°C. The average annual temperature is 25.1°C. The annual rainfall is 1958 mm. The average humidity is 80%. Caatinga (dry zone shrubs) occupies 65.1% of the state's area, followed by coastal vegetation, cerrado, tropical rainforest, and palm forest.
