Joseph Kessel

French novelist. Born in Argentina as a Russian Jew. Educated in both Russia and France, he became a journalist. During World War I, he served as an aviation officer, and later participated in an expedition to Siberia. Since then, he has written reportage on major events around the world. He was recognized for his experiences in "Red Plains" (1922) and "The Pilot" (1923). He also wrote "Army of Shadows" (1946), a magnificent interwar panorama of "What Comes After Happiness" (1950), a story of the founding of Israel, "Land of Love and Fire" (1961), and "The Cavalry" (1968), an adventure story of an Afghan soldier. The author, who always lived in a turbulent world and lived with an adventurous spirit, all of his works express a life that shines with action within a realistic depiction of the world. He was also a prolific creator, with works such as "Belle de Jour" (1928), which depicts the unique psychology of a married woman's prostitution, and "Lion" (1958), which depicts the hearts of humans and animals. フランスの小説家。ユダヤ系ロシア人としてアルゼンチンに生まれる。ロシア、フランス両国で教育を受けてジャーナリストとなる。第一次世界大戦中は航空士官、その後シベリア踏査などに参加。以後世界各地の大事件をルポルタージュする。その体験から『赤い草原』(1922)、『搭乗員』(1923)を書いて認められ、またスペイン内乱、抗独レジスタンス体験から、『影の軍隊』(1946)、両大戦間期の壮大なパノラマ『幸福の後に来るもの』(1950)、イスラエル建国の物語『愛と火の大地』(1961)、アフガン戦士の冒険『騎兵』(1968)などを書いた。つねに激動のなかに身を置いて冒険の精神を生きた著者の作品は、いずれも世界のリアルな描写のうちに、行動に輝く生命を表現している。また人妻の売春を主題に特異な心理を描く『昼顔』(1928)、人と動物の心を描く『ライオン』(1958)などを含め、多産な創作活動を示した。アカデミー・フランセーズ会員。
