Eparchius Avitus
395 or 400-456
Western Emperor of the Roman Empire, reigned 455-456. Senator nobleman from Auvergne. Served at the Visigothic court, and in 439 became the highest official in Gallic Rome. In 451, he gained the support of the Visigothic army to counter the invasion of the Huns. In 455, encouraged by the Visigothic king and with the support of Gallic nobles and the army, he rose to the throne. The following year, he launched a war of revenge for the Vandals' sacking of Rome, and attempted to gain naval control over the Mediterranean, but failed due to failure to secure support from the Eastern Roman Empire, and was assassinated by General Ricimer.
