Brǎila - Brǎila (English spelling)

Brǎila - Brǎila (English spelling)

The capital of Braila County in southeastern Romania. It is a river port city on the eastern edge of the Romanian Plain, downstream of the Danube. It has a population of 216,929 (2002). The town has existed since ancient times, but its first recorded appearance was in the 14th century, when it appeared as a trading port called Brillago (or Drinago). In the 15th century, it became Turkish territory, and a fortress and settlement were built there, but in 1829, it was restored to Romania with the peace of Adrianople (now Edirne, Turkey). It is the second largest river port on the Danube after Galati, and is the starting point for ships bound for the Danube Delta. Industries such as steel, construction and transport machinery, shipbuilding, building materials, wood processing, textiles, and food are well developed. The Shunto Archangel Church was built as an Islamic mosque in the 17th century, but was converted into a Romanian Orthodox Church in 1831.
