A city in the Lubelskie Voivodeship in eastern Poland. It is located about 70 km east-southeast of Lublin, on the Żerka River, a tributary of the Bug River, near the border with Ukraine. It was annexed to Poland from Lithuania in 1366 and became the capital of the Chełm region. In 1795, it became part of Austria during the Third Partition of Poland, and in 1815 it was annexed to the Russian Kingdom of Poland. It became part of Poland in 1921. During World War II, two prison camps were set up by the German army, and about 90,000 people were killed. The July Declaration of the Polish National Liberation Committee was issued here on July 22, 1944. In addition to mining, cement, glass, and other industries are also produced here.
