...theater was surrounded by a wooden structure (the origin of the word "theater"). By the Hellenistic period, a building that served as a dressing room, called a skēnē, was built on an artificial hill behind the orchestra, and a shallow space in front of the skēnē on the hill, called a proskēnion, was established as a place for actors to perform. A good example of the theater of this period is the remains of the theater at Epidaurus in Greece (4th century BC).
