The prime interest rate is the interest rate offered by commercial banks in the United States to their most creditworthy customers for short-term business loans. It is also called the prime lending rate. It is an important indicator of the trend of short-term interest rates in the United States. In 1933, the banking industry in the United States set the prime rate in a uniform manner nationwide. Since then, it has been changed more frequently depending on the economic and financial situation of the time. Since October 1971, in order to reflect market interest rates more quickly, it has been changed to a floating system in which it slides to the interest rate of commercial paper (CP) (CP rate). Currently, a method is adopted in which the prime rate is determined flexibly, taking into account the trends of other market interest rates, mainly CD rates (in reality, other banks follow the movements of major banks).

アメリカの商業銀行が最も信用度の高い顧客に適用する短期事業貸出向けの最優遇金利。最優遇貸出金利ともいう。アメリカの短期金利の動向を示す重要な指標となっている。　アメリカで銀行業界により全国的に統一された形でプライム･レートが設定されたのは1933年である。その後時々の経済･金融情勢に応じてしだいに頻繁に変更されるようになり，71年10月以降は市場金利をより迅速に反映させるため，コマーシャル･ペーパー(CP)の金利(CPレート)にスライドさせるフローティング制に移行，現在ではCDレートを中心に他の市場金利の動向をも勘案のうえ弾力的にプライム･レートを決定する方法が採用されている(実際には大手銀行の動きに他行が追随)。
