The border between northeastern British India and Tibet was agreed upon in secret by Britain and Tibet during the Simla Conference in March 1914. It was drawn by Henry McMahon, the head of the British delegation, and runs from Dip Pass in the east to the border with Bhutan, including Tawang in the west. After World War II, the People's Republic of China took the position that it could not recognize the McMahon Line as a legacy of British imperialism, but in the 1960 border agreement with Burma (now Myanmar), it effectively recognized the McMahon Line as the border.
