Fumio Goto

Home Ministry bureaucrat and politician. Born in Oita Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Political Science at Tokyo Imperial University, he joined the Home Ministry. After serving as an administrative officer in various prefectures, he became the Chief of the Police Bureau in 1922 (Taisho 11). In 1924, he became the Chief of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, and in 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he became a member of the House of Peers. During this time, he played an important role as a bureaucrat in the Minto Party affiliated with Izawa Takio. He also led the Youth Association movement and served as chairman of the Japan Youth Hall. Later, as a director of the National Restoration Association, he promoted the "New Bureaucrat" movement, and in 1932, as Minister of Agriculture in the Saito Makoto cabinet, he led the movement to rehabilitate agricultural, mountain and fishing villages. In 1934, he became Minister of the Home Office in the Okada Keisuke cabinet, and carried out an election cleanup campaign. Immediately after the February 26 Incident in 1936, he became acting provisional prime minister. During World War II, he served as Vice President of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association and Minister of State in the Tojo Hideki cabinet. After the war, he was purged from public office. After the lifting of the ban on immigration, he was elected to the House of Councillors in 1953 and joined the Ryokufu-kai (Green Wind Association). His biography includes "Youth and Walking with Goto Fumio."

内務官僚、政治家。大分県生まれ。東京帝国大学政治学科卒業後、内務省に入る。各県の事務官などを経て、1922年(大正11)警保局長となる。1924年台湾総督府総務長官、1930年(昭和5)貴族院議員。この間、伊沢多喜男系の民政党官僚として重きをなす。また、青年団運動を指導して日本青年館理事長を務めた。その後、国維会理事として「新官僚」運動を推進し、1932年斎藤実(さいとうまこと)内閣農相として農山漁村更生運動を指導。1934年岡田啓介内閣内相に就任、選挙粛正運動を行った。1936年二・二六事件直後、臨時首相代理となる。第二次世界大戦中は大政翼賛会副総裁、東条英機(とうじょうひでき)内閣国務相などを歴任。終戦後、公職追放。解除後の1953年参議院議員に当選、緑風会に加入。伝記に『青年と歩む後藤文夫』がある。
