A representative historian of 19th century France. He is considered on the same level as Michelet and Tocqueville. He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure and studied at the French Institute in Athens shortly after it was founded. His work from his youth, La cité antique (1864), caused a great stir due to its bold hypothesis that explained social structure from the perspective of religion. He later turned to research on the transition period from ancient times to the Middle Ages, and wrote the magnum opus Histoire des institutions politiques de l'ancienne France, six volumes (1875-92).

19世紀フランスの代表的歴史家。ミシュレ，トックビルと並び称される。エコール･ノルマル･シュペリウール出身。創立まもないアテネのフランス学院に留学した。若き日の著作《古代都市La cité antique》(1864)は，宗教の観点から社会構造を説明する大胆な仮説により大きな反響を呼んだ。その後，古代から中世への移行期の研究へと向かい，大著《旧フランス政治制度史Histoire des institutions politiques de l’ancienne France》6巻(1875‐92)を著した。
