1830‐89 A representative historian of 19th century France. He is considered on the same level as Michelet and Tocqueville. He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure and studied at the French Institute in Athens shortly after it was founded. His work from his youth, La cité antique (1864), caused a great stir due to its bold hypothesis that explained social structure from the perspective of religion. He later turned to research on the transition period from ancient times to the Middle Ages, and wrote the magnum opus Histoire des institutions politiques de l'ancienne France, six volumes (1875-92). 1830‐89 19世紀フランスの代表的歴史家。
