Aerial photogrammetry

Aerial photogrammetry

Photogrammetry uses photographs taken from the air. It mainly uses aerial photographs taken from airplanes, but also photographs taken from balloons, satellites, and drones (unmanned aerial vehicles). In Japan, most maps are created using aerial photogrammetry, including the 1:25,000 topographical map that covers the entire country, as well as city planning maps, forest basic maps, road and river register maps, and plans for road, railway, and dam construction. Other fields of photogrammetry include aerial photo interpretation, such as forest interpretation, which involves observing photographic images to investigate forest growth and pests, geological interpretation, which involves determining geological structures to explore for underground resources such as oil, and soil interpretation and the investigation and interpretation of archaeological remains.
