(1) A dance from Argentina in South America. It is an abbreviation of mazurca ranchera (pastoral mazurka), a European dance that was brought to the Buenos Aires area and indigenized. It was popular in Buenos Aires in the 1930s, and many records were made, but it is rarely performed today. (2) Ranchera is sometimes an abbreviation of Mexican cancion ranchera (pastoral song).
