An American automobile manufacturer. It was founded in 1925 after Walter P. Chrysler, who had left General Motors, rebuilt the company from Maxwell Motors. In 1928, it acquired Dodge (established in 1914) and became one of the Big Three. From 1936 to 1949, it once surpassed Ford Motor, but in the 1950s, its performance deteriorated due to its excessive emphasis on technology, and internal conflicts led to a crisis. In 1961, unknown Lynn Townsend became president at the age of 42 and tried to turn things around. Its share of the American market temporarily fell to 8%, but rose to 18.9% in 1968. In terms of overseas management strategies, it is famous for taking over the French automobile company Simca in 1963. It then acquired Barreiros of Spain, which has its roots in the UK. After 1969, its performance deteriorated again and it continued to stagnate. In 1987, it acquired American Motors. In 1989, the company sold its shares in Mitsubishi Motors and Gulfstream Aerospace, and in 1996, it sold its defense and aviation divisions to Raytheon to focus on the automotive division. In 1998, the company merged with German automaker Daimler-Benz and changed its name to DaimlerChrysler. However, in 2007, the merger was dissolved and the company became a subsidiary of an American investment fund and changed its name to Chrysler LLC.

[Died] January 29, 1962. American violinist and composer born in New York, Austria. Entered the Vienna Conservatory at the age of seven, and studied violin under J. Massart and composition under L. Delibes at the Paris Conservatory in 1885. From 1888 to 1889, he toured the United States with pianist M. Rosenthal, achieving brilliant results. In 1943, he became a naturalized American. In addition to taking the world by storm as a violinist, he also composed and arranged many short violin pieces, including "Viennese Caprice," "Love's Sorrow," "Love's Joy," and "Chinese Drums," which are considered masterpieces. He came to Japan in 1923.

Chrysler, Walter Percy

Born April 2, 1875 in Wamego, Kansas
[Died] August 18, 1940, Great Neck, New York. Founder of Chrysler Corporation, one of the three major automobile companies in America. He first joined the Union Pacific Railroad as an apprentice at a machine shop, then devoted himself to the early days of the automobile industry, serving as the head of the Buick division and working at General Motors shortly after its founding. He was president of the Buick division when he left the company in 1919. Chrysler was founded in 1925, and in 1928 released the famous Plymouth, becoming a third force to rival Ford and Chevrolet.

アメリカ合衆国の自動車メーカー。前身はマックスウェル・モーターであるが，ゼネラル・モーターズを退職したウォルター・P.クライスラーが再建して 1925年に設立。 1928年ダッジ (1914設立) を買収してビッグ・スリーの一角に入る。 1936～49年にはフォード・モーターを抜いたこともあるが，1950年代には技術偏重で業績が悪化，内紛が加わって危機に見舞われ，1961年に無名のリン・タウンゼンドが 42歳で社長に就任，巻き返しをはかった。アメリカ市場のシェアは一時8%まで低下したが，1968年には 18.9%にまで上昇。海外経営戦略では，1963年フランスの自動車会社シムカの乗っ取りが有名。その後イギリスのルーツ，スペインのバレイロスを買収。 1969年以降再び業績悪化に見舞われ以後低迷が続いた。 1987年にアメリカン・モーターズを買収。 1989年には三菱自動車の株式とガルフストリーム・アエロスペースを売却，さらに 1996年には防衛・航空関連部門をレイセオンに売却し，自動車部門に集中することになった。 1998年ドイツの自動車メーカー，ダイムラー＝ベンツと合併し，ダイムラー・クライスラーと改称した。しかし 2007年には合併を解消。アメリカの投資ファンドの傘下に入り，社名をクライスラー LLCに変更した。

オーストリア生れのアメリカのバイオリニスト，作曲家。7歳でウィーン音楽院に入学，1885年パリ音楽院で J.マッサールにバイオリンを，L.ドリーブに作曲を学ぶ。 88～89年ピアニストの M.ローゼンタールとアメリカを演奏旅行し，輝かしい成果を収めた。 1943年アメリカに帰化。バイオリニストとして一世を風靡するとともに，作曲や編曲によるバイオリンの小品も多数残し，『ウィーン奇想曲』『愛の悲しみ』『愛の喜び』『中国の太鼓』などは珠玉の小品とされている。 1923年来日。

アメリカ三大自動車会社の1つであるクライスラー社の創設者。初めユニオン・パシフィック鉄道の機械工場に見習工として入社，のち草創期の自動車工業に身を投じ，ビュイック部門の製作部長として，創立直後のゼネラル・モーターズで活躍，1919年退社時はビュイック部門の社長であった。 25年クライスラー社設立，28年名車プリマスを発表して，フォード，シボレーに対抗する第三勢力となった。
