Ezo starfish - Ezohitode

It is a marine animal belonging to the family Starfish, class Asteroidea, phylum Echinodermata. It is found in Hokkaido, northern Honshu, Toyama Bay, and southern Karafuto (Sakhalin). It is a reddish-brown northern starfish with arms up to 10 centimeters long, slightly tapered at the base, and rough surfaces. There is variation in body color, with some being yellowish-brown and some with horizontal stripes. The arms are easily torn off at the base, and fall off immediately if touched. It lives on sand and mud in shallow waters, and feeds on bivalves and bottom fish, making it a harmful animal to fisheries. In terms of classification, it is sometimes divided into two subspecies: a northern type and a southern type.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ヒトデ綱ヒトデ科に属する海産動物。北海道、本州北部、富山湾、および樺太(からふと)（サハリン）南部に分布する。赤褐色をした北方系のヒトデで、腕の長さは10センチメートルに達し、付け根がややくびれ、表面はざらざらしている。体色の変異があり、黄褐色のものや横縞(よこじま)をもつものもある。腕は根元から切れやすく、触れるとすぐに脱落する。浅海の砂泥上に生息し、二枚貝や底魚を食べるので、漁業上有害な動物とされる。分類上、北方型と南方型の2亜種に分けることもある。
